Grief Awareness Day

A part of living involves experiencing grief at some point in each of our lives. Grief is an emotion of sadness felt when there is loss. Loss can result from the loss of a marriage, job loss, loss of home, a chronic illness, relocation to a new place, and the loss of a loved one. The loss of a loved one is one of the most complicated types of grief. Because grief is one of the most challenging parts of living it is important to honor the loss by continuing to live with joy in your heart. Keep your connectedness, and learn from the loss, so you can let go of the hurt. I implore you to accept the challenge of life and continue to live by slowly letting go of the hurt.

Some things that may be helpful in managing your emotions as you go through this process are:

  1. Don’t suppress your feelings, go through the emotion. Give yourself permission to face your grief and feel every emotion. Describe what you are feeling as you feel it.

  2. Journal and or write a letter about the happy moments that are connected to the grief.

  3. Talk out your emotions with others who have and have not yet gone through loss.

  4. Know that this emotion is not specific to you and everyone can and will go through some type of grief in their lifetime.

  5. Recognize your triggers. If the loss occurred near or during a special event or date prepare for it by allowing time to experience the emotion rather than working to ignore the emotion.
